The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has ramped up its enforcement cooperation among EU member states to address GDPR enforcement gaps, especially in complex cross-border cases. The recent Vienna meeting gathered data protection authorities (DPAs) to identify “strategic cases” and establish new methods for collaboration. The goal is to improve response times, streamline investigations, and ensure consistency across EU countries, regardless of which authority leads a case.
To support this, the EDPB has introduced updated guidelines and frameworks, including the Coordinated Enforcement Framework, which now allows a smaller, focused group of DPAs to lead joint investigations. Additionally, the EDPB is leveraging specialized experts in technical fields like AI and cybersecurity to support DPAs facing resource challenges. This collaboration will help ensure efficient and harmonized enforcement as the EDPB navigates increasingly complex cases involving Big Tech and other emerging sectors.
These moves reflect the EDPB’s commitment to evolving GDPR enforcement amid growing data privacy challenges across the EU.
