Fine validation - Twitter

On October 18th, the Irish Data Protection Commission’s decision to fine Twitter was confirmed by the Dublin Court. The request for confirmation of the decision to apply the administrative fine was made under article 143 of the 2018 Data Protection Law.

An inquiry was opened January 2019 following the notification of a Twitter data breach. The data breach was related to a bug whereby a user's account would be unprotected if the email was changed via the Android application. The purpose of the inquiry was to analyze certain issues related to the notification of violation. Twitter notified the Data Protection Commission of the breach of personal data after the deadline, on January 8 2019, which should have been carried out by January 3 2019.

The decision was based off the violation of articles 33, no. 1 and 33, no. 5 of the GDPR, given Twitter’s failure on notifying the Data Protection Commission within the deadline and the failure to properly document the violation.

Thus, due to the infractions, a fine in the amount of € 450,000.00 was imposed on Twitter.
