Some hours before Russia’s invasion, Microsoft detected a new “offensive and destructive”
software attack. These cyberattacks have been causing major consequences on Ukraine’s
commercial, energy, finance and agricultural sectors. "These attacks on civilian targets raise serious concerns under the Geneva Convention, and we have shared information with the Ukrainian government about each of them,” stated Microsoft’s president Brad Smith in a blog post. According to what Smith argued in 2017, the rise of digital crime and the Sony data breach showed how cyberspace can become a global battleground. Microsoft suggests that cyberattacks like those in Ukraine should fall within the reach of war crimes agreements.
