Record of 746 million euros fine imposed on Amazon Challenges for non-compliance with the GDPR

Amazon records a record fine - €746 million - for violating the European Union data protection rules. The appeal was filed at the Luxembourg Administrative Court this year on October 12, according to Luxembourg court spokesman Henri Eippers. The fine was filed in July. The data protection regulator determined that Amazon violated GDPR by processing users' personal data. The decision was triggered by a 2018 complaint by French privacy rights group La Quadrature du Net. Amazon refused to comment on the incident, although referenced an earlier statement in July stating that "there was no data breach and no customer data was exposed to any third parties." Amazon previously noted that it "strongly" disagreed with the Luxembourg authority's conclusions. The company says it collects data to improve the customer experience and sets guidelines that decide what employees can do with them. Some lawmakers and regulators have raised concerns that the company has used their information to gain an unfair advantage in the marketplace. The EU has been investigating Amazon's use of selling data on its platforms, checking whether it unfairly favors its own products or not.
