The adequacy decision for the transfer of personal data from the European Union to the Republic of Korea has been adopted under the General Data Protection Regulation.
After debating this situation in March 2021, the adoption of this adequacy decision confirms the shared commitment of the Republic of Korea and the European Unionand relates to a high level of data protection.
Based on the decision, personal data will be able to be transferred harmlessly from the European Union to the Republic of Korea. This is a benefit for the economy and citizens of both sides, without any need for further authorisations or additional tools.
The promotion of high privacy and personal data protection standards and the facilitation towards international trade can go hand in hand.
By covering the data exchanges between the authorities, this adoption will also facilitate the regulatory cooperation.
The European Union and the Republic of Korea agree that this provides a unique opportunity to strengthen the partnership betweenboth parties, bilaterally and multilaterally.
