United Kingdom: New conduct code to protect children’s data and privacy on-line

The English Control Authority has launched a new code of conduct applicable to online services aiming children - the children’s code. This Code is based on the idea that children should be protected in the online world just as they are, or should be, protected in the offline world.

The Children's Code provides measures related to age-appropriate design, and sets 15 standards that companies must incorporate into any online service used by children, making the protection of youth data a priority.

This code is applicable to apps, games, websites, social network, educational sites and streaming services.

The measure applied include the need to disable and/or limit location gathering, profiling and the use of nudge techniques that encourage users to provide unnecessary personal data.

The tech giants operating in the UK could face hefty fines if they do not follow the new data protection and privacy measures for children contained in the issued code of conduct, which entered into force on September 2 2021.
